Here are two diagrams, from Thoughts from the Cheap Seats, that contrast the difference between traditional and missional churches. Quite straightforward.

An archived blog pertaining to the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana), with the intent of provoking constructive discussion related to our theology and mission, within broad contexts. The intent is to see our emphases on holiness and unity become more meaningful and practical for the complex world in which we live. good stuff
i confess that we're not there. i think our diagram would be more of an hour glass
we have a tension over the direction towards the purpose of week to week 'worship', make us all happy -- or toward mission, community revolution, all of us willing to sacrifice.
the former proponents truly believe that lives will be changed when we offer the right program at the right time (emphasis on right)--they believe that everyone will not only be motivated to invite, but the unchurched/dechurched will run in the doors and to the altars
the latter are doing amazing acts of kindness and really entering into some people's pain. they've stopped arguing with the alternative, and are focusing their energy on the mission.
but the tension is still there--and its effects on unity and leadership are very real
that is a great graphic. I will be using that to explain some of the differances that to people are trying to get their minds around.
